The family of a baby who died when her tired mother accidentally smothered her say
Queensland Health isn't responding urgently enough to coronial recommendations.
BELA HEIDRICH was about two hours old when she died at Rockhampton hospital in 2008.
She had been place in bed next to her mother, ZELIA BLOMFIELD, after being breastfed.
One month after the coroner recommended that all Queensland Health birthing services
have a specific policy on bed sharing, the family is frustrated by the lack of action.
Ms BLOMFIELD's lawyer, CHRISTINE MERCER, says the response to date has been inadequate,
with Queensland Health saying they'll only consider the findings.

QLD:Nuclear power still important - Garnaut
The federal Government's chief climate adviser Professor ROSS GARNAUT believes nuclear
power still has a vital role to play in global efforts to reduce emissions .. despite
the crisis at Japan's Fukushima plant.
Professor GARNAUT has told scientists at the CSIRO's Greenhouse conference in Cairns
.. that nuclear power will play a significant part in reducing emissions in developing
countries such as China.
He says the task of tackling climate change would be much harder without nuclear power.
However .. Professor GARNAUT says it makes little sense for Australia to shift to nuclear
power while it has an abundance of alternative resources.

MELBOURNE, Aug 16 AAP - A Melbourne supermarket has been evacuated and the premises

had to be evacuated," Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman Trevor Woodward told AAP.
"The water flowed out of the supermarket and into four other shops.

Vic: Minister denies wrongdoing in OPI case
MELBOURNE, April 6 AAP - A senior Victorian government minister has rejected allegations
that he tipped off former police assistant commissioner Noel Ashby that his phone was
tapped.
A leaked document, seen by AAP and other media, alleged Ashby met with a government
minister in April 2007 and was told "he should be careful" if he spoke with former police
association secretary Paul Mullett on the telephone.
Ashby resigned from the police force in 2007 after the Office of Police Integrity (OPI)
accused him of leaking sensitive police information to Mullett.
Both men have been charged in relation to the alleged leaks.
Fairfax radio host Neil Mitchell named the minister on Monday as Victorian roads and
ports minister Tim Pallas.
After a cabinet meeting on Monday, Mr Pallas fronted the media and vehemently denied
the allegations.
"At no stage do I accept that the allegations in respect to media circulation today
are correct," a defiant Mr Pallas told reporters.
"I have no knowledge of OPI investigations as roads minister, and I had no knowledge of those."
He admitted meeting Ashby on April 2, 2006, as alleged in the document, but said the
meeting was about road projects and tunnels.
The pair met on a number of occasions in Mr Pallas' capacity as roads minister and
Ashby's as assistant commissioner in charge of traffic.
He said they discussed an enterprise bargaining agreement for police but could not
say whether Mr Mullett's name arose in any of the conversations.
"I believe the issues of the police association and its EBA was raised, I can't be
certain about whether Paul Mullett in particular was," Mr Pallas said.
Mr Pallas also said he had "absolutely no doubt that all my ministerial colleagues
would have conducted themselves appropriately in these matters".
He also said the premier had full confidence in him.
"I can tell you I spoke to the premier immediately after cabinet and I told him what
my statement was to be today and he indicated his satisfaction with that statement."
Mr Ashby faces 13 counts of perjury, 13 of misleading the OPI and three of breaching
OPI confidentiality.
The report was allegedly prepared for Mr Ashby in a bid to have the police association
fund his legal defence.
Mr Mullett is also facing corruption charges arising from the OPI hearings.
Both Mr Mullett and Mr Ashby have denied any wrongdoing.

Qld: Former Patel patients seek compo inquiry
BRISBANE, April 29 AAP - Patients of former Queensland surgeon Jayant Patel are visiting
state parliament today to call for an inquiry into compensation.
Patel, a former surgeon at Bundaberg hospital in southern Queensland, is in custody
in the United States while a court considers his extradition to Australia on manslaughter
charges.
The Queensland government has paid out almost 300 claims to former patients of Patel
through a special process.
But a number remain outstanding, while others have been rejected.
Bundaberg Burnett Patient Support Group president Ian Fleming said the process was
flawed and an inquiry is needed.
"We want a judicial inquiry ... into this whole affair to fully and fairly investigate
the whole compensation process and the way it's been handled," Mr Fleming said.
The patients are also seeking an update from Attorney-General Kerry Shine on the extradition
of Patel.

It's no holiday in some stores -- Service with a sneer is on the rise
By JEFF GAMMAGE, THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER
Date: 12-23-2007, Sunday
Section: NEWS
Edtion: All Editions
You're standing at a checkout counter, ready to pay, and the twentysomething behind the register is talking on her cellphone. So you wait, and wait, and wait, and when the clerk finally finishes her conversation, she offers not an apology, but a grimace that suggests you've interrupted.
Sound familiar? It has a name: the Service Gap.
It's business-speak to describe a phenomenon fueling plenty of holiday-shopping frustration: the difference in how baby boomers and members of the "millennial generation" define the concept of customer service.
"There's a tremendous culture and value gap," said William Withers, a communications professor at Wartburg College in Iowa who, with his colleague Patrick Langan, has spent years studying customer service.
It's not that those in their teens or 20s are lazy or mean. Or that boomers are getting crotchety as they age. It's that both groups have far different social experiences and expectations, and demographics tend to put boomers in the checkout line and millennials behind the counter.
By 2010, Withers predicts, boomers will constitute nearly half the population and control about 65 percent of the disposable income. As shoppers, they were shaped in an era when department stores were well-staffed with experienced salespeople who greeted customers with a polite "How may I help you?"
The millennials, a cohort almost as large as the boomers and one that will continue to make up a substantial portion of the service sector, have no such experience. Their shopping background is more impersonal, often conducted via phone or the Internet. Even their social networks are maintained via technology text messages, instant messages, and Web sites such as Facebook and MySpace.
To put it in words a boomer can understand, face-to-face interaction just isn't their bag.
"They're clueless," said Franni Segal, 55, a travel agent with a degree in retailing. "They're more interested in talking to their friends. They have no incentive to make the sale."
When she was in her 20s, working on commission as an assistant manager at Bonwit Teller, she recalled, she and her colleagues eagerly courted customers. "Today when you go into a store, they're not interested in your needs. ... With the kind of service you get now, you might as well be on the Internet."
But Sarah Collier, a 20-year-old college student who has worked in retail sales, said she believes her peers' customer-service skills depend on their background and training, not their age.
"I don't think it's necessarily the entire generation. I think it's just the individual," said Collier, a hard worker who sells time-share vacations for a Poconos resort. "I know how to give good customer service."
Others do, too. Withers takes care to note that many excel at the craft, but said that generally, "those who are coming up in the service sector, they're just another breed of cat. They have interpersonal skills that we're finding are underdeveloped."
Millennials are more likely to have been raised by single or divorced parents, and in families in which both parents worked. Their cultural touchstone isn't the brotherhood of Woodstock but the bloodshed of Columbine. As clerks and waiters, they can struggle to meet customers' expectations.
More is at stake than etiquette. The bottom line for a business is, well, the bottom line. And dissatisfied customers will spend their money elsewhere.
Others suggest the problem is one of age, not culture.
"I'm not seeing the Service Gap," said Susan Magee, an adjunct professor at Chestnut Hill College in Pennsylvania who has studied the millennial generation. "I just think they're kids."
Remember, she said, it's the holiday season, and store clerks of all ages are busy and stressed like everyone else. "I think at Christmas, if the person can manage to say, 'Hi,' get my item in the bag, and not forget my gift receipt, I'm satisfied."
Withers blames the Service Gap partly on employers: Many lack the time or money to train workers. In a 2005 study, Withers and Langan reported that 78 percent of companies provided "some" customer-service training, but that 68 percent wanted to offer more.
What's the answer for peeved holiday shoppers?
Adjust your expectations down, Withers said. Or be willing to pay more to shop and dine at establishments that have the time, interest and money to train their employees.
Nobody should waste their breath berating a young clerk or waiter, he said.
"Calling over the manager isn't going to matter," Withers said. "The server may still not look you in face. And they'll be texting their friends about what an ass you are."

NSW: $100,000 reward for information on missing Amber Haigh
SYDNEY, Aug 18 AAP - NSW police are hoping a $100,000 reward will help solve a five-year-old
mystery surrounding the disappearance and suspected death of a young woman.
NSW Police Minister David Campbell said the reward could lead to finding or solving
the case surrounding Amber Haigh who disappeared when she was 19.
"$100,000 is on offer to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and
conviction of the person or persons responsible for the suspected death of Ms Haigh,"
Mr Campbell said.
"Police believe that Ms Haigh met with foul play, but they have been unable to find
enough evidence to prosecute anyone over her disappearance."
A married couple who lived with Ms Haigh in Kingsvale, southern NSW, reported her missing
on June 19, 2002.
They had dropped her off at Campbelltown railway station in Sydney's west on June 5,
2002, but never heard from her again.
Mr Campbell said despite extensive investigations police were unable to uncover any
clues about her disappearance.
"There are still many unanswered questions in the Amber Haigh case and it is only with
help from the public that police can expect a breakthrough," he said.
