DISPUTE FINALLY RESOLVED; IT'S ALL DOWNHILL FROM HERE.(SPORTS)

Byline: AMY SHIPLEY The Washington Post

An acrimonious five-year dispute over where to begin the men's Olympic downhill competition at the Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, ended Monday when Olympic organizers agreed to raise the starting point, acceding to the demands of international skiing officials and angering Japanese environmental groups.

Accepting a proposal by the International Ski Federation, organizers announced that the start on Happo Ridge would be moved to an altitude of 1,765 meters, or 5,791 feet. That's 279 feet higher than the original position at 5,512 feet -- which would have made for the shortest downhill course in Olympic history.
